New York state of mind
Recently it seems all my blog titles have been Billy Joel songs, I like that. We arrived in NYC tonight got to our hostel and went out exploring. I was far too tired to go but the girls pretty much forced me and boy am I glad they did! We are only here for one night it's an amazing location. Just ten blocks from times square. We saw the empire state building Chrysler buiding rockerfella centre and NBC (as seen in Seinfeld) in our quick stroll. What a city, it feels fake, it really is so much more than I imagined, and it just doesn't seem real at all. There is just so much happening everywhere and so much excitment.
Ok so I'm on the bus from NYC to Toronto and I've got two moments from the last 24 hours II'd like to share. We just went under the Hudson river it's 7:42am, were now in new jersey and I had my first real glimpse of NYC from the outside in the day. The sun was rising along side the manhattan skyline and I was in awe. There is the sound of the man next to me snoring away in the background, the bus doesn't smell the greatest but at that moment nothing else mattered. I've been drawn to this city for as long as I can remember I don't even remember why. It's not Seinfeld either, although that has fueled the fire. Were now driving away from NYC and I'm seeing ice on the side of the road and little frozen ponds still waiting for snow. It's minus 8 in Toronto tonight so hopefully we will see some there. Even before that though we are driving through buffalo, a city which cops bucketloads of lakeeffect snow, yes I did my homework. I will keep you posted as I can't wait to see sone of the white stuff.
Ok so since I last wrote on this blog, we've been on this bus for 9 hours and the scenery has changed dramatically. What started out as just bare trees, blue sky and minus 2 degree temperature has turned to a winter wonderland, with more snow than I have ever seen! (which before today was zero) but it's really thick here in buffalo, it's real cold although it feels warmer than NYC because there is no 40mph wind. I'd guess it's about -4 here ATM, now that my internal thermometer has been calibrated for below zero.
This brings me to my next story as the bus pulls out of buffalo and finally heads on the last leg to Canada!
Last night once we arrived in New York, as I mentioned we decided to go for a walk. Rach had rugged up but had neglected to put real shoes or even socks on. She didn't realised until it was far too late and she could no longer feel her feet. Oh I forgot she also wasn't wearing any gloves and to give u an idea, I had gloves with my fingers exposed and they were numb and stinging In about ten min.
So as we are walking around NYC we see the first nick nack (cheap rubbish) store and predictibly the girls went insane, in fact for a moment part of rachs brain was leaking out through her nose and eyes. Well I think it may have been another liquid but it was so cold she didn't know it was happening. We went into the nick nack store and then even I got excited, 1$ beanies! Now Rosanna before you start to cry I love your hat to bits but it wasn't warm enough for New York so I had to borrow one from Rach that makes me look like a russan vodka farmer or something (come to think of it that might not even be a real job). Even with that hat my head was loosing heat at a rate of knots and the $1 beanie proved to be the soultion.
Anyway moving on with the story (this is unusual a story of mine which is unnessisarily long and detailed) Rach and em both went bonkers after loosing parts of their brains due to the cold and Rach decided to spend 9 of her 11$ she had budgeted for the walk. By budgeted I mean she only took $11 with her and left her card at the room. In her frenzy to buy postcards, silly hats and other indescript rubbish she neglected the items which would keep her core temperatre at a safe level for the walk around town. Despite the fact that socks and gloves could be purchased for 1$ a pair in this very store.
As we walk out into the freezing cold and 40mph wind I was just able to deal with the cold thanks to my new coat (got it in LA) meanwhile Rach was being assulted by the brutal and unforgiving wind. I think at this point the rest of her brain slid out of her nose, ironically leaving only the pain processing lobe. I know this because conversation stoped and was replaced with wimpering and gibberish. ( I can see the Canadian border we just arrived at the immigration will have to disembark soon).
As the cold became too much I decided to buy a warm New York City hot dog with the Lot. To this day I have no idea what the 'lot' was but it took him like 10 min to pile up all the toppings and sauces. 1min later the hotdog was had gone to a better place and Rach was close to loosing her hands and feet. She turned around looked at Emily and I and I think tried to say 'i can't feel my extremities" or something to thst effect, however what came out was unrecognisable as any English phrase I have comeacross. It didn't matter though, we could see by the look on her face she was hurting. I couldn't help but laugh as her little red nose sent the last bit of her brain running towards her chin. That face is one I will never forget. I think she may have learned her lesson as she borrowed emily's socks this morning.
So that was great timing I'm just getting off the bus about to leave the United States, gun shots, murder, assalt and pepper spray (pun intended) hotdogs and burgers and enter Canada the land of mayple syrup, mayple trees, mayple leaves, mayple juice, mayple soup, mayple pie, mayple rolls ( think sausage rolls with less sausage and more mayple) mayple clothing, mayple powered cars, maypleade (like lemonade but made from mayple ice hockey and warm friendly hugs for strangers (at least I think they hug over here. The rest is definatly here though)
Bye for now.
Michael.
Ps over the border it feels like 6.3 degrees colder. Of course the sun just went down so that may have something to do with it.
Michael - bring back the pictures! Seriously. I was enjoying seeing the interesting photos you are taking.
ReplyDeleteI am sad about the beanie - but as I had nothing to go off (never having been in sub-zero / snowy climes) I am not surprised it was not fully equiped for the weather. As long as you still love it!
Lastly - maple. No "y". I am prepared to forgive you the spelling mistakes normally as you are typing on your phone - but it was repeated so many times... there's only so much abuse one word can take.
Enjoy your White Christmas.

Hi Mike I hope you have some pictures of the Big Apple for me as you know New York is my favourite place. Meantime wear the beanie UNDER
ReplyDeleteRosanna's masterpiece. The only other advice I have is to have a great time while you can ,,,,,,
